Located in the driftless area of Southwest Wisconsin, Blanchardville was established in 1848 on the Pecatonica River. The river was dammed for the purposes of building a grist mill.
The town was named for Alvin Blanchard, who purchased the mill in 1855. As in many of the smaller communities along the various rivers in the Midwest, the arrival of trains to the area allowed for economic growth in Blanchardville. The railroad in question in Blanchardville was the Illinois Central.
Today, the Pecatonica River and the 455 acre Yellowstone Lake provide great opportunities for fishing, camping, canoeing, boating, biking and hiking. Canoes are available for rent on the Pecatonica River and boats can be rented on Yellowstone Lake.
The nearby Yellowstone State Park consists of 1,000 acres of space for almost any outdoor enthusiasts with ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing available during the winter months. A State Park sticker is required and can be purchased at the Park’s entrance. Next to the park is the 4,000-acre Yellowstone Wildlife Area. which is home to a variety of different species.
With it’s long history and lush wilderness nearby, Blanchardville continues to show that it has a lot to offer it’s residents. If you want to see the area for yourself, check out one of the listings below and visit Blanchardville today!
